‘LÉcole de la Rue’ ('School of the Street') is an organization aimed at 6 to 18 year olds who have fallen out of the education system and spend much of their time on the local streets. By structurally organizing joint activities, ‘LÉcole de la Rue’ tries to re-establish the link between the children and their families.
The organization is located close to our Polymer Chemicals facilities in Belgium - specifically in Mons, a suburb of Baudour. Many of the children living here are from complicated social backgrounds, often influenced by violence, drugs, divorce and poverty. These children easily drop out of school and hang around the streets, often creating trouble for local inhabitants.
In 2006 employees of both Polymer Chemicals and Surface Chemistry chose to support the local ‘School of the Street’ association — which organizes several activities for more than 80 children spread over the year — with funds from the Community Program.
Ten such employees assisted with visits to a science park, PASS — where the children could learn about various vocational possibilities — and a rock-and-roll festival in Dour. Furthermore, a workshop was organized aimed at getting the children back into a classroom environment, which included a breakfast and explanation of the food pyramid. In December, the employees collected second-hand toys so that each child could receive a Christmas present.
The support will continue in 2007, 2008 and 2009 when theatre and dance workshops are planned for the children. Akzo Nobel employees will also help to build a labyrinth in the school as well as installing a PC network in the classrooms.
By giving some basic structure back to the children through the 'School in the Street' program, they will be in a much better position to create a better future for themselves, hopefully avoiding the pitfalls and problems which have long been associated with the area.
